About the Institute
The 1864 Research & Innovation Institute (Ltd/Gte) is a nonprofit company limited by guarantee, registered in Nigeria (RC No. 9379383). Everything we do is in service of one mission: helping government institutions serve the people who need them most. We build simple data tools inside government institutions, with the frontline workers who use them, grounded in evidence and co-created for daily use.
Our mission
Nigerian government agencies collect enormous amounts of data they cannot use. Officers log incidents in notebooks. Institutions gather service records but never disaggregate them. The information that could guide better decisions never reaches the people making them.
Our mission is to close that gap: to build simple, evidence-based data tools inside government institutions, co-created with the frontline workers who use them, so that public servants are better informed and the people who depend on government services. often the poorest and most vulnerable. actually receive them.
That mission is what makes us a nonprofit: we exist to serve the public interest, not a bottom line. We are structured as a company limited by guarantee rather than a charity — any income is applied solely toward our programs, and no portion of it is paid out to members. Our work is made possible by grants and philanthropic partners who share our belief that government data systems, done right, are a public good.
We listen to frontline workers before designing anything, and we publish what we learn, including what did not work.
No new software, no IT department required. We build with tools government workers already have, so systems survive after we leave.

How we work
We listen to frontline workers before designing anything. Evidence of the real problem, not the assumed one, shapes everything that follows.
No new software. No IT department required. We build with tools government workers already have.
The people closest to the problem shape what gets built, so it is sustained long after we leave.
When government fails, the poorest pay the price.
If your institution collects data it cannot use, we want to hear from you.
